As any engaged couple quickly discovers, weddings are expensive. Ever wish there was a way you could register for your financial future instead of another set of matching monogrammed towels? Meet Shareswell. The secure stock gifting site makes it quick and easy for couples to register for stocks, without ever having to leave the comfort of home. Simply create a registry of selected stocks, use a brokerage account to facilitate the trades, and then share your unique Shareswell URL with family and friends or post it to your wedding website.

Shareswell Home2

Setting up a Shareswell registry is free and you can use an existing brokerage account or open a new one to register for securities. The only fees involved are the credit card processing fees (2.9% + $0.55 per transaction), which gift givers pay at checkout. Your wedding guests can select stocks from your registry to purchase as well as add a gift message. If gift givers can’t find a couple’s registry, they also have the option to send a stock gift through Shareswell Give.

When a gift is purchased, you’ll receive a gift notification e-mail with details about the purchase, and the cash value of the gift (net of processing fees) is transferred into your brokerage account. Once the funds clear, you can use the funds to purchase stocks listed on your registry.

A Shareswell registry is a great way for newlyweds to start saving for the future — whether you want to save for a down-payment on your first home, add to that nest egg, or simply pair it with a more traditional gift registry. Hey, maybe you’ll need towels for that first home, too!

What types of stocks would you add to your wedding registry? Let us know in the comment section below.

Gifted Grooms: Home Depot’s Lithium Ion Tool Collection

Monday, October 15th, 2012

Let’s be honest, grooms tend to get the short end of the wedding gift stick. It’s nothing personal against them, it’s just the way weddings have been done since the dawn of time. This is why we’ve partnered with The Home Depot to showcase some top gifts ideas for guys that make great additions to a wedding wish list — specifically their stellar Lithium Ion tool collection.

Lithium Ion technology started in power tools in the home improvement sector and now crosses into categories like outdoor power, paint and flooring. The battery’s technology provides customers with a number of advantages over traditional NiCad battery-powered tools. As new husbands work on those inevitable “honey-do” lists, The Home Depot has them covered with Lithium Ion tools to start or enhance their growing tool collection in their man caves or garages. We recently had the honor of taking one lucky couple (Brandon & Diana) on a Home Depot store walk to learn about what specific tools are great to have when starting a marriage.

Soon-to-be newlyweds Brandon & Diana getting ready for our Home Depot Store walk.

Our store walk was led by Luke, who happens to be one of Home Depot’s most knowledgeable – and interesting – tool experts. He explained to us that Lithium Ion batteries produce a consistent charge throughout the life of the battery, can be charged many more times than other batteries and are not damaged by leaving the charger on too long. The batteries are also light, allowing for smaller, more powerful outdoor and power tools.  A true win-win.

Brandon and our store walk guide, Luke.

We asked Luke what his top suggestions were for grooms looking to build a tool collection from scratch. His response started and stopped with the Ryobi ONE+ system. Features include versatility, value and performance for DIYers  on a budget. The Home Depot conveniently has over 50 Ryobi products that are compatible with the ONE+ system. Drills, saws, outdoor power tools, and other types of tools all use the ONE+ batteries. Below is a sampling of some of the gifts that Brandon and I picked out during the store walk.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: how can I get in on some of this Lithium Ion fun? The answer is to enter our giveaway below. We’re giving away a special Lithium Ion gift from Home Depot.  You can receive one entry per day by answering a question about one of your upcoming household projects. You can also receive two additional entries by following us on Twitter. The contest will run from October 15 through October 22nd.

The Home Depot partnered with bloggers such as us to help promote their Lithium Ion power tool collection. As part of this promotion, we received compensation for our time. They did not tell me what to purchase or what to say about the products. The Home Depot believes that consumers and bloggers are free to form their own opinions and share them in their own words. The Home Depot’s policies align with WOMMA Ethics Code, FTC guidelines and social media engagement recommendations. The giveaway winner will be chosen by random and prize fulfillment will be handled by a third party.

Guys: Be a Registry Boss

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

It’s always exciting to hear about new supplemental wedding registries hitting the market. Today’s guest contributor just so happens to be the founder of one of these companies. His start-up, Foodie Registry, allows couples to register for restaurant gift certificates. We really dig the concept and hope you will to. Take it away, Ben.
like a boss

Congratulations on getting engaged! You’re the man. Now let me tell you what happens between now and your wedding date. A series of expensive decisions will be made about every single facet of your big day. And while your loving fiancee will seek your input and appear on the surface to run a very democratic decision-making process, in reality your measly opinion will matter very little and, even more importantly, you won’t really care!

Cream linens instead of white? Great! Kelly green instead of emerald for one of your wedding colors? Sure honey! Photobooth instead of portrait photographer? That’s what I was thinking too!

Don’t get me wrong. You should definitely care about your wedding…it will be the best day of your life. It’s just that the little details will matter soooo much more to her than most of them will to you, so you’ll go along to make her happy. Which is exactly what a good guy like you should do.  And, there are some decisions that you will for sure have a distinct position on.

Full bar or just beer and wine? FULL BAR! WE MUST HAVE A FULL BAR!

See what I mean? Another area where you should man up and have a voice is your registries. The reason? Unlike most of the wedding decisions, which are things you have to live with for one blurred, whirlwind day, your registry decides things that are a bit more permanent. Things that will clutter your house or apartment and, if you’re not careful, turn it into a bonified chick pad.

One solution is to make sure you pay close attention what she’s aiming that scan gun at and veto any gross violations, but another is to steer your girl toward registries that are more your speed. Most couples end up with around 3 registries these days. Leave all registry decisions up to her?  Enjoy your new matching pink towels and your new mango pitter.

This is why we’re such big proponents of alternative (to department store) registries. The Man Registry itself offers an awesome selection of unique gifts that appeal both sexes (and some that are just for you!). My company Foodie Registry lets wedding couples register for gift certificates to awesome restaurants. And there are a lot more options, from honeymoon registries to charity registries to adventure registries and more. The main thing is to make sure you research the options, see what appeals, and throw some alternatives in the mix. You’ll be happy you did.

Ben Reid is co-founder of Foodie Registry, a wedding registry for gift certificates to the best restaurants in Chicago, New York, San Francisco, and Denver. You can connect further with him on Google+, Twitter and Facebook.
