Ask the Wedding Babe: Is Valentine’s Day Necessary?

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

cupid shot by arrow

Is this what you feel like doing on Valentine’s Day?

Q – I just surprised my fiancée with an amazing wedding proposal a few weeks ago. Do I still need to do something special for her on Valentine’s Day?

Congrats on your recent engagement! While it sounds like you really knocked it out of the park with your proposal and probably scored some major points with your new fiancée, that doesn’t mean it’s game over in the romance department just yet. It’s important to continue to show her how much you love and respect her from time to time (and vice versa!) and show her that your relationship will keep getting better over time.

Some ladies may disagree with me here, but I have to admit that I’m not a huge Valentine’s Day fan either. The cost of roses seems to double around this time of year and getting restaurant reservations can be a nightmare. Who needs it?

While I think it’s important to keep romance alive in a relationship, I don’t think it’s necessary to create a special holiday around it. A holiday is just one day. I think it’s much more important to show your fiancée how you feel about her throughout the year, rather than going all out on one day just because it’s February 14th. To me, occasions or milestones that are special to both of you, such as anniversaries, birthdays, promotions or even a random Tuesday night, are much more important to celebrate.

That said, if you know your fiancée IS a huge Valentine’s Day person, ignoring this holiday may really disappoint her. You don’t want her to think that getting engaged could be the last time you’ll show your romantic side, right? If it’s important to her, at a minimum, try to plan a date with her to celebrate the day, either on the day itself, or when it works out for both of you. If you want to do more, go for it. I’m sure she’ll love it.

Remember, if you’re planning to spend the rest of your life together, you should both make a real effort to keep things interesting every now and then—whether it’s in the bedroom, on a date or simply going about your daily lives. Come on, guys, use your imagination!

Keep reading each week as we’ll be posting new advice from The Wedding Babe. If you’ve got a burning question for her, please submit it here. And please, no more requests for panties. The Wedding Babe is a happily married woman.. who could probably kick your ass.
