See What Happened on the Day the Bachelor Died

Friday, February 21st, 2014

Did you know that one of the earliest recorded bachelor party traditions is the groom-to-be being forced to dig his own “bachelor grave?” His friends and family would gather around to mourn his passing and copious amounts of alcohol would be consumed. Morbidness aside, that’s pretty damn cool. This rite of passage has unfortunately faded over time, but it could be heading for a revival. Case in point: Bobby from Kansas City recently sent us this video of his younger brother Collin’s bachelor party. In addition to the mock funeral, the weekend party also included guns, trampolines and a mechanical bull. The best part? Everything was captured on GoPro for your entertainment.

Thanks to Bobby for submitting this gem.

The 1985 World Series + My Groom’s Cake

Friday, February 20th, 2009

Long before I got married, I had decided that my groom’s cake was going to steal the show at the wedding reception cake table. As a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan (and season ticket holder) there was never a question of what the design of my cake would be.

As fate would have it, I married a girl from Kansas City. For you non-baseball fanatics out there – the St. Louis Cardinals and Kansas City Royals played a 7-game World Series back in 1985. This series was unfortunately won by the Royals (with a little help from Don Denkinger) As you would imagine, when I met my wife’s family, I was reminded early and often about the outcome of that World Series. I let it slide most of the time, because when you live in Kansas City, you don’t get much to cheer about sports-wise.

Much of the STL/KC teasing came from my wife’s two older brothers. My relationship with them consists of a lot of practical jokes, prank phone calls, and downright trash talking. Needless to say, my wife was scared to death about the prospect of them playing a joke on me on our wedding day. I had a gut feeling there would be a prank of some sort. I honestly wouldn’t have minded if they switched my tux size, sabotaged my toast, lost my wedding band etc. – the question I kept asking myself was “Do they have the guts to mess with my groom’s cake and my beloved Cardinals?”

The answer, of course, was yes.

Where did this other groom’s cake come from?

The appearance of a 2nd groom’s cake came as quite a shock to myself and my many friends and family that had made the journey from St. Louis for the wedding. My friends definitely let me hear it all night. Personally, I couldn’t help but crack a smile. I’ve got to hand it to my brothers-in-law, they pulled off a memorable prank that didn’t upset the bride. Cheers to that!
