Guy Wedding Movies?

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

I don’t know about all you guys out there, but I loved Bride Wars! The movie had it all – laughs, tears, and love! An instant classic. I can honestly say that I’ll be lining up to buy it on the day it hits Blu-ray…….

Bride Wars? Loved it.

Bride Wars? Loved it.

Sorry, my wife was standing over my shoulder making me type that. She’s gone now. Yes, she made me go see Bride Wars. It was her turn to pick, there was nothing I could do about it. The movie actually did have it’s high points (Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson), but as a whole it wasn’t much for a guy to get excited about. As I sat there watching Liv and Emma battle for wedding supremacy , I got to thinking – why aren’t there more wedding movies geared towards men? In fact, I could only think of a few that would even be acceptable for a man to watch:

Wedding Crashers: I defy you to find a guy that didn’t enjoy this movie. If someone says they didn’t, they’re lying.  It’s right up there with Old School and Anchorman in terms of re-watchability.  On a sidenote, crashing a wedding is not as easy as it appears to be in the movie. Found that one out the hard way.

American Wedding: Sure, the American Pie series had overstayed it’s welcome by the time this one came around. But, that opening scene at the restaurant is always good for a few laughs. Plus, there are some valuable lessons to be learned from this film…particularly if you have a friend like Stifler – don’t let him be in charge of keeping the wedding bands safe.

The Groomsmen: Edward Burns gives a solid performance. The issues in this film are ones that most men can probably relate to. It’s definitely a dialogue driven movie, but worth checking out if you haven’t seen it.

Bride of Chucky: Chucky is a misunderstood villain. All he ever wanted was to find love. Bride of Chucky is the story of the search for that love. This heartfelt tale should make for a romantic evening for two.

Am I forgetting anything? Let us know what other guy wedding movies are out there.

Groom’s Guide to Booking Wedding Day Transportation

Monday, January 26th, 2009
Bruce Wayne's wedding day transportation

Bruce Wayne's wedding day transportation

Finally — something about the wedding that doesn’t involve what color the flowers should be or how many tiers the wedding cake should have! One wedding-related issue that should get most grooms very excited is cars. It’s the groom’s financial responsibility to arrange transportation from the reception site to the hotel, airport, or wherever else the married couple will be headed after the wedding festivities have ended. Because there are a lot of options when it comes to wedding transportation, we’ve broken it down to help simplify the decision. Here are some of the most popular options.

Traditional Limousine
— You can’t go wrong with this traditional and always classy option.

Stretch SUV — Popular models include the Cadillac Escalade, Ford Excursion, and Hummer limos. Just be sure to book early because these choices tend to go fast!

Sports Car — Check your local phone book for companies that specialize in renting high-end sports cars such as Ferraris and Lamborghinis. Or if you happen to know someone who’s a car collector, you might even be able to borrow one for the occasion.

Classic Car — This is another classy option. Rolls Royce, Packard, or Bentley limos are usually available through a limo service.

Horse Drawn Carriage
— If you want to make your bride feel like she is in a fairytale, this could be your best bet. These are very popular for summer weddings when you can count on the weather being warm. If you or someone you know owns a horse, this could be the perfect opportunity to include pets in the wedding.

Want to Stand Out from the Crowd? — Use your imagination. On your wedding day, the world is your oyster. If you want to fly off in a helicopter, make it happen! Batmobile? Why not?

How soon should you book? You should reserve your transportation no later than four months before the wedding. This is especially important if you’re getting married during the popular spring and summer wedding months. If you wait too long, you could end up calling every limo service in the state to find exactly what you want.

Typically, your costs will include a flat hourly rate, fuel, and gratuity. Most limo services that specialize in weddings can also provide champagne, wine, or flowers in the vehicle (at an extra cost). However, if you really want any of these extras, we recommend buying it yourself and dropping it off beforehand to save you a few bucks.

GroomsAdvice Recommendation: It’s pretty tough to go wrong with any of these choices. If you’re a car lover, go with something that represents your style, and surprise your bride with some champagne waiting in the car. This ride can often be some of your first alone time as a married couple. Have a toast in honor of each other.

Engagement Ring for the Groom? Don’t Believe the Sales Pitch

Monday, January 19th, 2009

With the economy in the dumps, companies in every industry are inventing ways to squeeze every penny they can out of their customers. The jewelry business is no different. It seems the latest popular sales pitch is trying to convince guys that the new fad is dudes wearing diamond engagement rings. Word to the wise: don’t fall for this guys!

Now, this isn’t a “promise ring” we’re talking about. Promise rings are a traditional way to state your intentions to marry before the engagement. You’ll often see these worn by high schoolers who are in love (or think they are) and are too young to be officially engaged. The rings in question in this blog are actual diamond engagement rings for men. Give me a break.

We're all for changing wedding traditions. Just not this one.

We're all for changing wedding traditions...just not this one.

About two years ago when I was personally going through the ring-buying process, my fiance and I walked into a jewelry store (that will remain un-named) to check out some of the various ring styles and learn about the 4 c’s. The fast-talking salesman immediately took us for amateurs and proceeded to go on his rant about how men’s engagement rings were the new hot trend in weddings and yada yada yada. Luckily, we had done our homework and were aware of this deceptive tactic before we ever walked in the store. One of the key things to remember is that jewelry salespeople prey on young couples that are obviously shopping for engagement rings. The younger you look, the more ideal of a target you are. For my wife and I, we probably looked like we had just stepped out of middle school band practice…(laugh it up, when I’m 60, I’ll look 40).

For you future grooms out there that may be heading to the jewelry store soon – remember to always have  a plan and never let a slick salesperson control the situation. There’s nothing wrong with saying “I’m just looking.”

Be sure to go over the groom’s guide to ring shopping before you head out into the wild. Cheers!

Groom-Friendly Wedding Showers: Stock the Bar Shower

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

Looking for a wedding shower that both the groom and bride can get excited about? Look no further than the bar shower. Whether the engaged couple already has a bar in their home, plan to have one, or simply enjoy entertaining guests – a bar shower is a great way to include the groom and other guys in the pre-wedding festivities.

This is a great shower for groomsmen or friends of the groom to organize. First, think about the types of bar gifts the shower should include. For example, is the shower being thrown to help stock the couple’s bar with barware gifts (such as wine, beer, martini, margarita, brandy or champagne glasses), utensils and accessories (such as wine and beer bottle openers, wine racks, jiggers, martini shakers or drink recipe books) or liquor only? We recommend including all of the above.

Next, think about the invitations. Make sure to include the theme of the shower someplace on the invitation, so guests will know what kind of gifts are appropriate. If guests will be bringing liquor, you may even want to call the guests that have accepted ahead of time to let them know what type of liquor to bring. Otherwise, the couple may end up with seven bottles of scotch. While this may not be a problem for some couples, others may prefer a slightly more diversified bar. If the gifts will include other bar items, it’s helpful if the couple has already registered for some options.

What about guests? This type of couples shower easily lends itself to the wedding party and friends of the couple, but can also include close family members and extended relatives. This type of shower is usually held during evening hours, so refreshments can include drinks and hors d’oeuvres rather than a full meal.

GroomsAdvice Tip: What could be better than a shower that brings together friends, good liquor and plenty of bar gifts? Not only is this a great way to stock the couple’s bar, it’s also a great opportunity for some of the couple’s friends who don’t already know each other to meet in a fun, relaxed atmosphere before the wedding.
