The Anatomy of a Flash Mob Marriage Proposal

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

I recently stumbled upon video of a marriage proposal that (very creatively) utilized a flash freeze mob in Chicago’s John Logan Statue Park. If you haven’t seen this yet, check it out:

We wanted to delve into this growing trend of flash mob usage and what would lead to a guy wanting to propose to his girlfriend this way. We tracked down the groom-to-be, Nick Redmond, and asked him to walk us through the planning and execution of this incredible marriage proposal that took two months of planning and the help of countless others to pull off.

It started at the beginning of February, I had been thinking of ways to propose to Amy and wanted to do something truly spectacular.  Amy and I have always loved downtown Chicago and it has always been our favorite place to be together.  From the beginning, I wanted to do something that hadn’t been done as a proposal before, and something that was truly unique.  I thought about how busy of a city Chicago is, and that it would be amazing if just for a few minutes, I could somehow freeze time and propose in that moment to Amy.  My first course of action was to create a false Facebook page under the name ‘John Jay’.  I then created an event titled ‘Chicago Freeze Flash Mob’ and began seeking out random people in Chicago to try and help out.

From the looks of her reaction, we’d call this a success. So would Greg Miller from Chicago’s Advertising Anonymous. Greg says that flash mobs are here to stay. He references the largest Flash Mob Society, Improv Everywhere, as proof of the staying power. Improv Everywhere has 49,714 members worldwide.

Greg’s company has been planning and executing mob marketing activities for several years. They were first marketing agency in Chicago to organize it’s own flash mob, which was the Water Wars event at the Chicago Air & Water show in August 2009.

From Greg – “I just love Nick’s story because it basically cost him nothing and was one of the most creative and memorable proposals I’ve ever heard of.”
