Every once in a while there’s a wedding trend that leaves those not into weddings scratching their heads and asking “Huh? What is that?”

After talking to some potential grooms, I think the macaroon may fall into that category. Simply put, a macaroon is a type of cookie. Jewish readers may instantly think of those odd-shaped Passover cookies that come in a tin, but that’s not what your caterer is talking about.

Wedding macaroons are usually small, cake-like cookies with a marshmallow-like or other filling. They come in a variety of colors and have a more sophisticated taste than a cookie or cupcake. Wedding planners, caterers, and pantone-obsessed brides like macaroons because they look so pretty on the plate. Personally, I think they’re yummy, but I’ll admit they’re an acquired taste.

Even if you aren’t particularly interested in serving macaroons at your wedding, feel free to suggest it to your fiancée as proof that you are, in fact, interested in wedding planning and keeping up with your end of things!

—-

They say the way into a man’s heart is through his stomach. We couldn’t agree more. Looking for man-friendly recipe ideas for your next couples shower or man shower? Don’t stress. We’ve got you covered. Check out some of our ideas to get your creative juices flowing and, of course, feel free to put your own unique spin on them. Keep in mind that these recipes also work great if you’re preparing food for the rehearsal dinner.

A simple, fail-safe idea is to go with a Super Bowl or tailgate party theme. Remember that nearly any food can be fried or grilled. If you have a deep fryer on hand, the possibilities are virtually endless. A few of our favorite foods to fry: fish, chicken wings, cheese, pickles, zucchini, peppers, olives and mushrooms. For grilling, you can go with the traditional burgers, dogs, brats, barbeque chicken, meat and veggie kabobs, fish, or try kicking things up a notch by grilling something a little different such as spicy lamb sliders. To increase the flavor, try grilling on cedar planks. If your guests are die-hard sports fans, try using a burger or dog grill topper with your crowd’s favorite team logo or mascot.

A few more of our favorite recipe ideas:

Tacos/burritos – fill soft tortillas with your meat of choice, pico de gallo, cheese, sour cream and guacamole.

Pigs in a blanket – wrap vienna sausages, polish sausages or hot dogs with store-bought crescent rolls. Lightly brush the outsides with garlic butter and bake.

Bacon-wrapped apricots or dates – because bacon goes well with anything. (recipe at Real Simple)

7-layer dip – Refried beans, jalapenos and fresh avacado. What else is there in life? (recipe at Food Network)

Potato salad with bacon – it takes about 20 minutes to prepare, but the memory of its taste will last a lifetime. (recipe at Real Simple)

Grilled cheese sandwiches with chutney – a fresh take on an All-American classic. (recipe at Real Simple)

Spiced beef empanadas -a great example of something you could buy pre-made in the frozen food section at your local grocery store – if you don’t care about taste. This recipe from Real Simple would get two thumbs up from us if we were willing to put down our empanadas.

Bottom line: Go with your gut. If you like it, odds are your guest will, too. Just make sure to offer a little variety (and a few veggie options for non-meat-eaters) and you’ll be sure to please everyone. Cheers!

The Arizona Cardinals were 40-1 odds to win the Super Bowl before the season began. In week 16, they went to New England and were trounced by the Patriots 47-7. Only in the NFL could this team now be playing for a shot at being world champions. Parity has made predicting what’s going to happen during the season and playoffs downright impossible – but we’re going to take our best shot.

Arizona Cardinals 23 Pittsburgh Steelers 20

Hey, who are we to bet against an underdog? We think Kurt Warner has just a little more magic left and he’ll call it a career after his Cardinals take down the Steelers. He tends to play close games in Super Bowls, and we think this one will be no different. Arizona is just flat-out a fun team to watch. The Steelers are solid, but by no means unbeatable….and their injury questions do raise some concern.

Also, we’ve gotta mention Larry Fitzgerald. Here is his stat line for the three playoff games that the Cardinals have played so far:

23 catches. 419 yards. 5 touchdowns = RIDICULOUS!

A scene we should see often on Sunday

By Jimmy Horner, Co-Founder of TheManRegistry.com

Today, I’m proposing a new American tradition, hereby dubbed: App Day. This tradition should be treated as every other holiday in this grand country, either by taking the day off work, or to make it even easier to receive approval from the federal holiday commission, it could even be held on a Sunday every year. On second thought, maybe easiest of all would be to collocate it with another existing time-honored and manly tradition — Super Bowl Sunday.

Now that we have the day carefully chosen, let’s expand upon the concept. First off, every citizen (or guest) will be tasked, no — honored, with bringing at least two appetizers to the occasion (read: party). One stipulation: one of the food items must be fried. I know what you’re thinking health-conscious America, “That can’t possibly be on my new 2009 diet!” But fear not, there are multiple ways to thoroughly enjoy this holiday, even with lighter fare. On the healthier side, appetizers could include fried mushrooms, zucchini, ochre, squash or fish. On the more traditional end, dishes could focus on fried chicken wings, mozzarella sticks, sausages, you get the idea. The key to this holiday is to think outside the box — don’t just let your imagination wane. Think chili, little smokies, quesadillas, fried pickles…the possibilities are virtually endless.

If you already have another tradition in place for Super Bowl Sunday that simply can’t be broken, this is a perfect opportunity to extend this holiday to a groom-to-be’s man shower instead. “Man Showers” have become extremely popular in the last several years as men are getting more involved with weddings. I personally can’t think of a better way to celebrate a man’s impending nuptials than by downing plate after plate of fried foods chased by cold beer with close friends and family. So find a day that works for your buddy and get started.

TIP: If you don’t already have one, I’d recommend picking up a deep fryer ASAP because this day will soon become one of the great American holidays citizens look forward to each and every year, so the investment will be well worth it — cheers!

—
