If you’ve watched any football or baseball playoff games over the last month, you’re probably aware that something called “engagement season” is upon us. It’s the time of year where jewelers launch marketing campaigns targeting men who may be thinking of popping the question over the holidays. These ads often make the engagement ring shopping process seem like a breeze. The truth is, however, that it rarely is. It can be a daunting task if you’re going at it alone — which is where having a helpful little bird can come in handy.

We hire accountants, real estate agents and wedding planners to assist with some of life’s biggest moments — why should the engagement ring purchase be any different? This is where Little Bird Engagement Ring Consultant comes in. Little Bird’s co-founders, Danielle and Lia, are diamond and style experts who have guided men all over the world through the complex process of engagement ring shopping. The last thing you want to do is make an expensive mistake, so Little Bird is very thorough in their process. They take the time to get to know you, help design the ideal ring and find it at the best price. They’ll save you countless hours of research time, meet your proposal deadline and save you money. What’s not to love?

Here are Little Bird’s top three tips for guys thinking about popping the question this holiday season:

1. Please, please get started early. Did you know that 33% of engagements happened on Christmas Eve last year? That means that there are thousands upon thousands of people shopping for rings between September and December. As you can imagine, things get pretty crazy. Prices jump, good options get snapped up and inventory starts to dwindle as the months go by.

2. Give yourself time to do your research. Every diamond is slightly different, but you can do some sleuthing and figure out equivalent prices for a diamond with similar characteristics to the one you have your eye on. Have this knowledge ahead of time so when you see a ring you really like you have the confidence to act quickly. Keep in mind that inventory turns over very quickly this time of year. If you’re looking at an exceptional diamond, you can bet you’re not the only one.

3. Don’t feel bad if you’re confused or overwhelmed by the amount of diamond info out there. We built up our level of expertise over years of industry experience and had to spend months at the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) to absorb the vast amount of detail that goes into analyzing a diamond. The average guy can’t be expected to teach himself all this in a few weeks before he goes shopping. That’s why you want an engagement ring consultant. Little Bird’s experts guide you through the process and educate you specifically on the subjects that are most relevant to your search. You don’t have to get a gemology degree to get a great ring for a stellar price.

Starting early is such good advice. My fiance started late in the game, and ended up proposing without a ring. It all worked out, but I think he felt like he was disappointing me. A good idea is to look at what kind of rings she wears, and if she doesn’t wear any, don’t get anything too bulky! Great advice for all those future grooms out there!
