You’ve decided to take the plunge and now it’s time to choose a diamond ring for your girlfriend. You’ve planned the perfect proposal in your mind and you’re ready to start shopping for engagement rings. Then it suddenly occurs to you – you have absolutely no idea what size diamond ring would fit on her finger! Don’t fear. Here are a few ways you can determine her ring size without ruining the surprise:

Become a Jewel Thief

Ok, don’t actually become a jewel thief, but instead “borrow” one of the rings she wears out of her jewelry box. Bring the ring along when you’re shopping for her engagement ring and the retailer will be able to determine the correct size.

There are a few things to keep in mind if you go this route to find out her ring size. First of all, make sure the ring you’re borrowing is a band that she wears on the same finger her future diamond ring will rest upon. Another option is to take a band that you know which finger she wears it on, which will help the jeweler to estimate the size of her ring finger. Secondly, make sure to get the ring to the jewelers and back as quickly as possible. You don’t want your girlfriend missing a favorite piece of jewelry as this may cause her to begin to suspect something.

Quiz the Inner Circle

If your girlfriend has a tight knit circle of friends, then one of them may know her ring size. You could also question her mother or sister about her ring size. If they don’t know it, you could ask them to covertly find out and get back to you with the answer. A friend asking about a ring size is less likely to make her suspicious than if you casually ask what her ring size is. However, keep in mind that asking the friends and family members of your girlfriend does take a leap of faith. Whoever you ask must be sworn to secrecy to prevent ruining the surprise. In addition, be prepared to act quickly once you ask someone else to help you. The more people who know what you’re doing, the harder it is to keep it a secret.

Call Upon Your Inner Artist

Taking a ring out of her home or asking her friends about her ring size may seem too risky. Instead, you can find out what size engagement rings to look at by snatching one of her rings and tracing the inner circle with a pencil and piece of paper. Then, bring the paper along when you go to shop for her diamond ring. The jeweler can likely determine her approximate ring size from a traced drawing.

While She’s Sleeping

If your girlfriend can sleep through a hurricane then this may be the best method for you to find out what size diamond ring to buy. While she’s sound asleep, take a piece of string and tie it around her ring finger. Knot the end and save the string to bring along diamond ring shopping. However, expect to have a pounding heart and sweating brow as you pray she won’t wake up while you’re tying the string. On that note, be prepared to have an answer as to what you’re doing in case she does wake up.

There are many other ways to determine ring size if you aren’t bringing your girlfriend along to shop for engagement rings, including simply calling or emailing a diamond jewelry retailer such as Hearts On Fire, who can then send you a ring sizer to help estimate finger size. But in all – don’t worry if you get the size wrong. It’s better to have it a bit too large on her finger than too small to slide on the finger properly, but rings can almost always be brought in to be resized after the proposal.
