Groomsman vs. Usher: A Decision for the Ages
By Guest Blogger: OneWed.com
It seems simple at first you’ve got a brother and two best friends. Voila, you have your groomsmen. Ahh, but did you forget about your cousin, it’s not like you’re close or anything, but your mother is already pushing the idea of including him in your wedding. There’s also your fiancée’s brother, and her cousin, and that friend who helped you get a great deal on the photographer… What do you do with all these extra guys?
That’s why the role of “usher” was invented. Strictly speaking, there’s no real reason you need ushers at your wedding. If you’re having an informal wedding, people can seat themselves. If the wedding is more formal, the groomsmen can do double duty. But, if you need to find roles for people, usher is a great choice. As a bonus, it can even be a gender-neutral role. After all, how much strength does it actually take to hand someone a program and walk her to her seat? One note of caution, don’t go overboard on the ushers, you do still have to buy each of them a gift and a boutonnière, costs cost that can add up.
