OneWed’s Local Flavor: What the Hell is a Color Palette?

Color

Every once in a while we get a question from a groom that makes us realize that brides and grooms really do go into wedding planning with very different sets of knowledge.

For example, a groom recently asked me “When the florist asked what our color palette was, what did she mean?”

Here’s the scoop. In the old days, brides usually came up with one or two “wedding colors.” Think of them as team colors for the wedding. They dominated everything from the wedding invitations to the bridesmaids’ dresses, the napkins, and even the groom’s tie.

Today though, the idea of having everything match perfectly is a little dated. Instead, brides, florists, and wedding planners tend to think in “palettes.” A palette is just a group of colors. It could be based on one color in different hues (Blue palette = blue, light blue, navy blue, etc), two or more colors (Blue and Grey palette = cobalt blue, light grey, dark blue, charcoal grey) or a theme (Fall palette = orange, red, brown, chocolate brown).

That wasn’t so hard, was it?
