There are so many part time wedding photographers out there that couples are buying cheap and crossing their fingers in the hope they got it right - quality matters - quantity can never make up for that, 5000 bad photographs are still 5000 bad photographs. The only thing i would add is check they are members of a recognized association then they will have to have a contract and things like insurance and specific back up equipment - in the UK there are around 27,000 so called wedding photographers - yet there are only 1354 listed on the Master Photographers Association web site that tells you something....
