The 1985 World Series + My Groom’s Cake
Long before I got married, I had decided that my groom’s cake was going to steal the show at the wedding reception cake table. As a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan (and season ticket holder) there was never a question of what the design of my cake would be.
As fate would have it, I married a girl from Kansas City. For you non-baseball fanatics out there – the St. Louis Cardinals and Kansas City Royals played a 7-game World Series back in 1985. This series was unfortunately won by the Royals (with a little help from Don Denkinger) As you would imagine, when I met my wife’s family, I was reminded early and often about the outcome of that World Series. I let it slide most of the time, because when you live in Kansas City, you don’t get much to cheer about sports-wise.
Much of the STL/KC teasing came from my wife’s two older brothers. My relationship with them consists of a lot of practical jokes, prank phone calls, and downright trash talking. Needless to say, my wife was scared to death about the prospect of them playing a joke on me on our wedding day. I had a gut feeling there would be a prank of some sort. I honestly wouldn’t have minded if they switched my tux size, sabotaged my toast, lost my wedding band etc. – the question I kept asking myself was “Do they have the guts to mess with my groom’s cake and my beloved Cardinals?”
The answer, of course, was yes.
The appearance of a 2nd groom’s cake came as quite a shock to myself and my many friends and family that had made the journey from St. Louis for the wedding. My friends definitely let me hear it all night. Personally, I couldn’t help but crack a smile. I’ve got to hand it to my brothers-in-law, they pulled off a memorable prank that didn’t upset the bride. Cheers to that!

I remember that Series. The ump definitely blew the call! Thanks for the cool groom’s cake photos. My Bride to Be and I have been talking about me getting a football-shaped groom’s cake. Now that I’ve seen your baseball version, I’m definitely going for the pigskin groom’s cake.
