1985 World Series Groom’s Cakes

Long before I got married, I had decided that my groom’s cake was going to steal the show at the wedding reception cake table. As a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan (and season ticket holder) there was never a question of what the design of my cake would be.

As fate would have it, I married a girl from Kansas City. For you non-baseball fanatics out there – the St. Louis Cardinals and Kansas City Royals played a 7-game World Series back in 1985. This series was unfortunately won by the Royals (with a little help from Don Denkinger) As you would imagine, when I met my wife’s family, I was reminded early and often about the outcome of that World Series. I let it slide most of the time, because when you live in Kansas City, you don’t get much to cheer about sports-wise.

Much of the STL/KC teasing came from my wife’s two older brothers. My relationship with them consists of a lot of practical jokes, prank phone calls, and downright trash talking. Needless to say, my wife was scared to death about the prospect of them playing a joke on me on our wedding day. I had a gut feeling there would be a prank of some sort. I honestly wouldn’t have minded if they switched my tux size, sabotaged my toast, lost my wedding band etc. – the question I kept asking myself was “Do they have the guts to mess with my groom’s cake and my beloved Cardinals?”

The answer of course was yes.

Where did this other groom's cake come from?

The appearance of a 2nd groom’s cake came as quite a shock to myself and my many friends and family that had made the journey from St. Louis for the wedding. My friends definitely let me hear it all night. Personally, I couldn’t help but crack a smile. I’ve got to hand it to my brother-in-laws, they pulled off a memorable prank that didn’t upset the bride. Cheers to that!

My mother drew a distinction between achievement and success. She said that ‘achievement is the knowledge that you have studied and worked hard and done the best that is in you. Success is being praised by others, and that’s nice, too, but not as important or satisfying. Always aim for achievement and forget about success.’
